Featuring LED digital counters in which numbers from 1 to 9 blink at different speeds, Sea of Time - TOHOKU is a ten-year project to pray for the souls of the victims of the Great East Japan Earthquake and leave memories of the unprecedented catastrophe for future generations. A part of the project is exhibited here. The production funds are collected through crowdfunding, with the aim ultimately to install 3,000 digital counters in the Tohoku region. Miyajima’s work is not only for viewing, but also functions as an open platform where each viewer can consider and share with others how he or she perceives or acts in relation to the concepts of life and death.
