No.5 "The past and future of Art Basel"

Over the last ten years, the international contemporary art market expanded rapidly - both in the West and in developing markets such as Russia, China, Latin America and India. As key events within the art market, art fairs have thrived under these conditions, becoming both the marketplace and the meeting place for the art world's elite players. Switzerland's Art Basel, now 40 years old and the world's most prestigious art fair, and its sister fair, Art Basel Miami Beach, which debuted in 2002 and is the most important fair of the Americas, have been at the leading edge of this phenomenon. Marc Spiegler discusses Art Basel's history and future, including the evolving role of art fairs in the post-finance-crisis global economic environment.
