"URGENT TALK" is a new platform to discuss urgent topics with artists, curators, critics and activists who are making changes in the world.

Urgent Talk 013: dOCUMENTA (13) "How to Read the World’s Biggest Contemporary Art Festival"

Directed by Caroline Christov-Bakargiev, dOCUMENTA (13) opened on June 9th. dOCUMENTA is an exhibition of modern and contemporary art limited to 100 days which takes place every five years in Kassel, Germany. It is celebrated as one of the major international contemporary art exhibitions, often coincides with Venice Biennale. dOCUMENTA (13) is with no specific theme, involving more than 200 participants from all over the world, and is presented at more than 20 venues throughout the center of the city.
With rapid political and economical change as a background, how can we read dOCUMENTA (13)? What is the big vision of the current contemporary art and what is its message? What can we see in this spectacular international exhibition? With three panelists whom visited the opening in Kassel taking position as third parties will discuss “How to Read the World’s Biggest Contemporary Art Festival.

Minamishima Hiroshi(Professor, Joshibi University of Art and Design)
Born in 1957 in Ngano. Professor, Joshibi University of Art and Design, Tokyo. Graduated from Tsukuba University/ After wadering about in India, Minamishima started his career as;
curator of Iwaki City Museum of Art (1984-1987) , Hiroshima City Museum of Contemporary Art (1987-1990), Fondation Cartier pour l’art contemparain (1993), curator/director of Contemporary Art Museum, Kumamoto (2000-2008), International curator of Prague Triennale 2008, Commissioner of Japanese pavilion at Venice Biennale 2009 and won The Western Art Foudantion Prize, Arts and Sciences in 2008. Through his curation in numerous exhibitions, Minamishima put his focuses on Contemporary Art in post-communist countries, artistic works by lepers and socialist art in North Korean of those which have not been in the spotlight. Publications include Buta to Fukuon (Shichiken Publishing) and more.
Sumitomo Fumihiko (Curator, Curator of Aichi Triennale 2013)
Born in 1971. Sumitomo is one of the curators of the Beppu Contemporary Art Festival 2012, ‘Mixed Bathing World’ and upcoming Aichi Triennale 2013. He is also Curator for the reparatory office of the upcoming museum of Maebashi City, co-editor of From the Postwar to the Postmodern Art in Japan 1945-1989* Primary Documents (Museum of Modern Art New York (to be published in November 2012) and is a part-time lecturer at Tokyo University. He has previously worked at the NTT InterCommunication Center (ICC), 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, Kanazawa, and the Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo, etc. Publications include Karadano Zouyo (Hyouzou no Discourse 6 Souzou, University of Tokyo Press, 2000), Be Curator! (Film-Art, 2009) and more.
