"The Elegance of Silence" shows that in the face of globalization, relative economic instability, pervasive western cultural influence and huge advances in technology, many artists in East Asia have continued to engage creatively with the traditions of their region. This dialogue with or reaction against tradition is a common feature of all the work in the show. Work by 26 artists is presented - including painting, sculpture, installation, photography, video, craft and design - arranged broadly into two sections. The first deals with nature in the great outdoors, and features works relating to traditional depictions of mountains, hills, the sky, rocks, trees, water, wind and flowers. The second is more concerned with the organization of man-made interior spaces and architecture, such as thresholds, private rooms and ceremonial sites where the ancient art of feng shui has traditionally been applied.
Traditional philosophies have also been incorporated into the planning of the exhibition itself, and the layout of the exhibition will be arranged according to the harmonious principles of feng shui.
