No.1 "When the art inside you is exposed to society"
Miyajima Tatsuo is one of Japan's most important contemporary artists. In this first MAM Art Course lecture, Miyajima explores the relationship between society and art through an introduction of his own projects such as the "Revive Time" Kaki (Persimmon) Tree Project and the "Floating Time" Hospice Project.

Miyajima Tatsuo
Completed postgraduate studies in art at the Tokyo University of the Arts. In 1988 was selected to participate in the Aperto section of the Venice Biennale, where he garnered international acclaim for his work using LED digital counters. He has held many exhibitions in Japan and abroad and his works are included in the collections of Tate Gallery in London, Pinakothek der Moderne in Munich and the Museum of Contemporary Art, Tokyo. Instigated the "Revive Time" Kaki Tree Project, whereby he plants "second generation atomic bomb victim trees" – saplings from the seeds of a tree damaged by the atomic bomb in Nagasaki – around the world with the help of children.

Shin Misa, who specializes in art-related public relations and fundraising, shares her up-to-date knowledge of the international art market as she discusses the methods and joys of buying contemporary art.

Shin Misa
Graduated with an M.A. from New York University. From 1990 to 1999 lived in New York working in gallery management, public relations and fundraising for art. In 1999 moved to Tokyo to work at an artist-in-residence program, the Mori Art Museum and several other venues. Since 2000 has taught art administration at Tokyo University of the Arts. Currently specializes in management and consulting in the art, cultural and architecture sectors.
