"Go-Betweens" in a Minute (1)
Zhang O Daddy & I: No.29

Transcending, moving back and forth and emanating the "power to live". The "Go-Betweens: The World Seen through Children" exhibition focuses on the nature of children who go between different cultures, or between reality and the world of imagination. In "Go-Betweens" in a Minute, the curator offers commentaries on works in the show.

Zhang O
Here we have a series of portraits featuring white men and young Asian girls. What is the relationship between man and girl? These are photos to puzzle the viewer. As the title indicates, they are father and daughter. Zhang O visited girls who have gone to the United States from China via international adoption, and their adoptive families, and the result was this series.

Each family had its own story to tell, according to Zhang. All conveyed their joy at welcoming the girls into the family, many referring to their daughters as "Angel" or "Princess."
China's one-child policy and relaxing of laws surrounding international adoptions led to many children (almost all girls) making this journey across the water, leading to the creation of new family ties transcending nationality and blood.
