The 1980s and 1990s in South Korea was a period of transition from military dictatorship to democracy. It was also the time that Lee Bul studied sculpture at university and set out on her career as an artist. Lee's early work is characterized by use of her own body as an artistic medium, for example in street performances in which she wears “soft sculpture” suits resembling all manner of mysterious creatures.
