Talk “Black Americans’ Cultural Roots and Contributions”

For this program, we welcome James M. Vardaman, professor emeritus at Waseda University, also known for his books History of Black Americans (Chikuma Shinsho, 2020) and Discrimination Against Black People and the American Civil Rights Movement (Shueisha Shinsho, 2007), who will be giving a talk focusing on Black history in America.
During the talk, Professor Vardaman will look at how Black Americans have been downtrodden from 1619 to the present, and how their contributions to American culture (agriculture, industry, art, music, etc.) have been, with a few exceptions, largely ignored. The participants will then have the opportunity to reconsider the significant influence that Black people have had on American culture.

James M. Vardaman
Professor Emeritus, Waseda University. Born in Memphis, Tennessee, and raised in Mississippi. Graduate of Rhodes College. Princeton Theological Seminary, M.Div. University of Hawaii at Manoa, M.A. Japanese Studies. Academic focus: American culture. Publications (in Japanese) include The True Map of America (Asahi Shimbun Shuppan), History of Black Americans, An Introductory History of American Music (Chikuma Shinsho), Black Discrimination and the American Civil Rights Movement (Shueisha Shinsho), The American South (Kodansha Gendai Shinsho), The American South: Birthplace of Rock (NHK Books).
