It is special sake bottle created by Theaster Gates with Sawada Shuzo in Tokoname. Gates means “門” (MON) in Japanese, so the bottle is labelled with the character 門 in a layout designed by Theaster Gates. The sake is a rich and authentic dry sake.

These are special teas created by Theaster Gates at UJI TEA HORII SHICHIMEIEN in Kyoto. Gates means “門” (MON) in Japanese, which is why we have created the original MON blend series. They are, namely, a blend of matcha; kyo-bancha and hojicha teas, with brown rice; and hojicha with Japanese sansho peppercorn incorporated to create a completely new sensation of Japanese tea.

These are two special fragrances created by Theaster Gates in collaboration with SHOYEIDO INCENSE CO., a long-established incense company in Kyoto. The fragrances created come from Chicago and Tokoname and were the result of repeated discussions between the incense blender Fujimoto Teiji and Gates, as well as further visits to the area to develop the image of the fragrances.

- MORI ART MUSEUM RECORDs

The MORI ART MUSEUM SHOP 53 is opening MORI ART MUSEUM RECORDs during the Theaster Gates: Afro-Mingei exhibition. The event will sell new and used jazz, soul, funk, rare groove, etc. records selected by Ogawa Yusuke, a leading record collector in Japan and owner of the used record store UNIVERSOUNDS in Koenji, focusing on Black music that has influenced the creative activities of Theaster Gates.

- Special Sales of Ceramics by Eight Potters with Roots in Tokoname

Theaster Gates first came to Japan in 2004 to study pottery in Tokoname and has maintained ties with the region for over the past 20 years. During the Theaster Gates: Afro-Mingei exhibition, the MORI ART MUSEUM SHOP 53 will feature eight ceramic artists with roots in the Tokoname area and who represent various generations. The work by these artists (Ito Yushi, Ohara Koichi, Ozawa Tetsuya, Oyama Nobuhiko, Tsunokake Masashi, Mizukami Katsuo, Janssen Miyoshi Shiori, and toriimiki) being sold will be a variety items for daily use including teapots, bowls, and plates.
