How will the future of architecture be shaped? For this talk session, Sou Fujimoto will be joined by four up-and-coming architects whose work is turning heads - Koki Akiyoshi, Chie Konno, Erika Nakagawa, and Motosuke Mandai. Starting with projects they have undertaken to date, they will discuss the future of architecture, bringing together their individual perspectives.

Koki Akiyoshi
Akiyoshi founded the architecture-tech startup VUILD in 2017 with the goal of “democratizing architecture.” His work spans a wide range of design fields, from digital fabrication to social design, covering everything from objects to community revitalization. He has received a number of awards, including the Good Design Gold Award (2020) and the iF Design Award Gold (2025).

Chie Konno
Born 1981 in Kanagawa. Konno graduated from the Department of Architecture, School of Engineering, Tokyo Institute of Technology in 2005. From 2005 to 2006, she studied at ETH Zurich as a scholarship student. She completed her doctoral studies at the Graduate School of Tokyo Institute of Technology in 2011, and received her Doctorate in Engineering. In 2011, she founded KONNO, and since 2015, she has served as the principal of t e c o. Since 2021, she has been engaged in research and education at Kyoto Institute of Technology, where she currently holds the position of Specially Appointed Professor. Her major works include the residential project Sunny Loggia House (awarded in 2012 the Tokyo Association of Architectural Firms Housing Architecture Award Gold Prize) and the community cultural facility Kasugadai Center Center (2023 recipient of the Architectural Institute of Japan Prize for Design).

Erika Nakagawa
Born 1983 in Tokyo. Nakagawa graduated from Yokohama National University in 2005 and completed MA from Tokyo University of the Arts in 2007. She worked at ondesign from 2007 to 2014, and established Erika Nakagawa Office in 2014. Her major works include Yokohama Apartment (2009, Collaboration with Osamu Nishida / ondesign), Rhizomatiks Office 2015-2019 (2015), Momoyama House (2016), MC-EN @ Akiya Smart Village (2023), Yamanaka Terrace (2024). Her major awards include the JIA Young Architect Award (2011), Residential Architecture Award, Gold Prize (2017), the 34th Yoshioka Award (2018). She is a Lecturer at the Keio University Graduate School.

Motosuke Mandai
Born 1980 in Kanagawa. Mandai graduated from the Department of Architecture, Faculty of Engineering, the University of Tokyo in 2003, and completed his Master’s degree at the Department of Architecture, Graduate School of Engineering, the University of Tokyo in 2005. From 2005 to 2011, he worked at junya.ishigami+associates. In 2012, he founded Mandai Architects. His major awards include the DSA Grand Prize for Space Design, the JCD Design Award Gold Prize, and the Fujii Koji Prize. His major works include Oshika fisherman’s house (2016), Ishinomaki Huts (2021), and Shiiba House (2022).
