Symposium: The Potential of Architecture—Taking Sou Fujimoto’s Architecture as the Departure Point
The Architecture of Sou Fujimoto Related Program

In conjunction with the start of the exhibition, Mori art museum will hold a symposium that focuses on Sou Fujimoto’s architectural philosophy and practice from various perspectives. In Session 1, architects Kazuyo Sejima and Yoshiharu Tsukamoto will explore the present-day significance of architecture and its future potential in the light of Fujimoto’s work, using the contents of the exhibition as a departure point for discussion. In Session 2, Tanaka Hitoshi and Miyata Hiroaki will discuss the relationship between architecture and local communities, and the future of community development as exemplified by projects in which they are deeply involved, such as the Shiroiya Hotel (2020, Gunma, Japan) and Co-Innovation University (2024, Gifu, Japan).

Sou Fujimoto

Kazuyo Sejima
Received a degree in architecture from Japan Women’s University in 1981. In 1987, Sejima opened her own studio in Tokyo, and in 1995, together with Ryue Nishizawa, she founded SANAA. Her honors include the Golden Lion at the Venice Biennale*, the Pritzker Architecture Prize*, the title of Officier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres, the Medal with Purple Ribbon, the Praemium Imperiale*, and the RIBA Gold Medal*. Her major works include the 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, Kanazawa*, the Rolex Learning Center*, and the Louvre-Lens*. She is currently a Professor at the Politecnico di Milano, Professor Emeritus at Yokohama National University, and the Director of the Tokyo Metropolitan Teien Art Museum. (* as SANAA)

Yoshiharu Tsukamoto
Atelier Bow-Wow / Professor at the Graduate School of Institute of Science Tokyo, Ph.D. (Engineering).
Born 1965 in Kanagawa. Graduated from the Department of Architecture and Building Engineering at the Tokyo Institute of Technology School of Engineering in 1987. Tsukamoto studied at the École Nationale Supérieure d’Architecture de Paris-Belleville from 1987 to 1988 and completed his doctoral coursework at Tokyo Institute of Technology Graduate School in 1994. In 1992, he co-founded Atelier Bow-Wow with Momoyo Kaijima, engaging in a wide range of activities, including architecture, public space design, furniture design, field surveys, education, art exhibition participation, exhibition curation, and writing. He advocates for “Behaviorology,” promoting an ecological shift in architectural design and attempting to reclaim architecture from industry for people and communities. He is a 2022 Wolf Award Architecture Laureate.

Tanaka Hitoshi
Founder and CEO, JINS Holdings Inc. Founder and Chairman, Tanaka Hitoshi Foundation.
Born 1963 in Gunma. Tanaka founded JIN Ltd. (currently JINS HOLDINGS Inc.) in 1988 and launched the eyewear brand “JINS” in 2001. The company is now publicly listed on the Prime Market of the Tokyo Stock Exchange. In 2014, he established the “Tanaka Hitoshi Foundation” to support regional revitalization in Gunma, and started the entrepreneur support projects “Gunma Innovation Award” and “Gunma Innovation School.” In 2020, he opened the Shiroiya Hotel by renovating an abandoned ryokan (traditional Japanese inn), contributing to the revitalization of Maebashi, a regional city facing economic decline.

Miyata Hiroaki
Born in 1978. Professor at the Faculty of Medicine, Keio University. Miyata specializes in data science, scientific methodology, and value co-creation. His research revolves around promoting social reform by utilizing data science and other scientific methods to improve society. He is involved in a range of projects both within and beyond the medical field, such as the National Clinical Database - which involves around 5,000 hospitals across Japan in collaboration with the medical specialist system - and the nationwide COVID-19 surveys conducted via LINE, in cooperation with the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare.
