A message from Miyata Asuka:
The Minato Knitting ’n Stitching Club, launched in 2017, has been planned and operated as a place where local residents can enjoy chatting while working with their hands. Our Traveling Knitting ’n Stitching Club also aims to ‘bring what’s kept at home outside’ through handicrafts like knitting and sewing. People of different ages, backgrounds, and values can mingle naturally here. That’s why we value our “ground rules,” which are our basic guidelines (shared promises). We create a space where everyone can feel at ease, being considerate of each other and respecting differences.
Ground Rules for Participating in the Traveling Knitting ’n Stitching Club:
To ensure this space is a safe and enjoyable place for everyone, please:
* Do not discriminate or make assumptions about differences such as race, gender, age, physical limitations, or sexuality.
* Do not ask about or discuss personal matters such as participants’ appearance or family composition without discretion.
* If you unintentionally hurt someone, please speak to them gently about what was said.
* If you feel uncomfortable or stressed, please inform Miyata Asuka, the organizer.
* Writing paper will be provided, and museum staff will assist with sign language communication.

Miyata Asuka
Miyata Asuka lives and works in Mie Prefecture. She studied textiles and created works in a variety of knitting techniques such as hand knitting and self-modified electric home knitting machines. Her interdisciplinary practice moves across fashion, handcraft and art. She founded ‘Minato Knitting ’n Stitching Club (Minatomachi Shugei-bu)’ in 2017, a project to form a community with a wide range of people in the neighborhood through handcraft culture. The project has now been expanded in other areas across the country.
Minato Knitting ’n Stitching Club (Minatomachi Shugei-bu),
now managed by Miyata Asuka on commission, was initially run as a selected open call proposal from 2017 to 2023, funded by the Joint Committee of Port Town in Minato Ward of Nagoya in Aichi Prefecture. It is ‘an open space for members from various generations to get together and learn handcraft and life,’ and also is a practice ’to “bring home matters out” as an experiment.’
