Roppongi Crossing 2025 Workshop: Weaving Straw Sandals - That’s All It Takes - An Artist’s Winter Work: Straw Sandals
Roppongi Crossing 2025 Related Program
Conducted in Japanese
This workshop will be led by Amefurashi, a group of artists featured in the exhibition and based in Nagai, Yamagata Prefecture, along with local residents. Each participant will complete and try on a pair of straw sandals. Why not try weaving straw sandals with your own hands? These sandals are a rare sight these days.
Message from the Artists
We are working to preserve straw sandals, working with local residents who wish to “preserve” them. By weaving straw sandals with your own hands, a style deemed largely unnecessary in modern society, you may experience the feeling of craftsmanship and a connection with others. This workshop will be a place to share that experience with participants.

Amefurashi
An art collective founded in 2015. Based in Nagai City, Yamagata Prefecture. Since 2024, the group has been working with local residents and friends, with three core members: Murakami Jiro, Matsuzaki Ayako, and Ikeda Masatomo. Their base is in “Kosyau,” a former printing factory. They’ve been repairing the disused building, little by little, with their own hands. Rather than aiming for completion, they repair it as they use it, and think as they repair. This is how Kosyau is still in the works. They’re passing on straw sandals used in festivals, as well as brooms. It’s an extension of everyday activities, and their activities continue, gradually changing form over a continuous period of time.
