MAM Research 011: Tokyo Underground 1960-1970s - A Turning Point in Postwar Japanese Culture

2025.2.13 [Thu] - 6.8 [Sun]

Documentation

This exhibition examines the rise and fall of the underground culture, angura (as underground culture was often called in Japanese) that flourished in Tokyo from the late 1960s through the early 1970s, focusing primarily on ephemera (printed materials). Influenced by American experimental cinema, this culture touched various fields including art, theater, and music, and while linked to anti-establishment movements, it subsided in the early 1970s.

This documentation offers a comprehensive re-examination of the reality and significance of the underground scene, focusing on its philosophy, its practitioners, and its emphasis on events and places, through essays, photographs of exhibits, and transcripts of talks by Maro Akaji.
