New Rules of Play: Art, Children, and Society

We encounter the world through play, born of curiosity and a spirit of inquiry. Through experimentation, improvisation, and deep absorption, we discover our own sense of agency, possibility, and connection in society. Play also has the power to challenge the rules and conventions embedded in everyday life, opening familiar worlds to new ways of seeing. Through the works of contemporary artists, New Rules of Play: Art, Children, and Society reexamines play as a powerful force for unleashing the imagination.
This exhibition brings together artworks that illuminate the rich potential of play in diverse ways: spontaneous and ludic encounters, immersive installations that unsettle our physical sensation and perception, projects that question social norms, and participatory works that imagine new forms of coexistence. Spanning practices from the 1950s to the present, the exhibition also traces how artists have drawn on children’s openness and sense of wonder to question conventions and values surrounding art.
Children are not simply the audience for this exhibition, but active collaborators in its making. By reconsidering the adult-centered assumptions that have long shaped museum practice, the exhibition explores a more inclusive model that can be enjoyed across all generations.
