The world art scene today, a decade since the millennium, has taken on a more varied, complex and multifaceted look than ever. With a notable flourishing of artistic production by artists emerging from such areas as Latin America, the Middle East and Africa, contemporary Asian art is expected to garner more attention in the coming years as well, reflecting the rapid economic growth experienced by China, India, and other emerging nations in the region. We are all facing to an issue how we could mutually understand these vernacular cultures and socio-political situations in globally expanding art scene and markets. With this in mind, how is the world engaging with contemporary Asian art?

Mori Art Museum is organizing a special symposium to examine how today’s art institutions around the world are engaging with the increasingly prominent realm of contemporary Asian art at an occasion of our International Advisory Committee meet in Tokyo after 4 years. The first half will feature a discussion on how the global state of contemporary art is reflected in the collection policy and exhibition programming of leading museums in the West, and their views on contemporary Asian art in particular. In the latter half, experts on contemporary art in Asia, including China and Japan, will weigh in on how the global art scene, which has expanded to include Asia as one of its centers, is engaging with contemporary Asian art.
