Urgent Talk 036: On “Technodiversity”

Originally from Hong Kong currently teaching in Germany, Hui Yuk is a philosopher who examines the natural world and the rapidly evolving technological landscape of our time by referring to Gilbert Simondon, Martin Heidegger, and Jean François Lyotard’s critique on modern technology, as well as traditional Chinese philosophy. His unique reflection on AI (artificial intelligence), cybernetics, and digital technology led him to gain international recognition as one of the foremost emerging thinkers of contemporary philosophy. Recently, he proposed the concept of “Cosmotechnics,” which aims to understand technology not merely as a functional tool or device, but in connection to the larger world view of cosmologies.
In this Urgent Talk, Hui Yuk delivers a presentation on technology and futurism by centering his presentation on the theory on technodiversity.

- Hui Yuk Profile
- Currently teaches at the Bauhaus University in Weimar. Hui taught philosophy at the Institute of Philosophy and Science of Art of the Leuphana University Lüneburg where he wrote his habilitation thesis (2012-2018). He has been a researcher at the International Centre of Simondon Studies (ICSS) at the Maison des sciences de l’homme, Visiting Associate Professor at the School of Creative Media at the City University of Hong Kong, and Visiting Professor at the China Academy of Art where he teaches a master class with Bernard Stiegler every spring. He is the initiator of the Research Network for Philosophy and Technology, an international network which facilitates researches and collaborations on philosophy and technology. Hui is the author of three monographs: On the Existence of Digital Objects (prefaced by Bernard Stiegler, University of Minnesota Press, March 2016); The Question Concerning Technology in China: An Essay in Cosmotechnics (Urbanomic, December 2016); and Recursivity and Contingency (Rowman & Littlefield International, February 2019).
