Art Camp for under 22, Vol. 14 “6steps: Practicing ‘between’” (Two-day Program)
The Architecture of Sou Fujimoto Related Program
Conducted in Japanese
Art Camp for Under 22’s is a program for 13-22 year olds to think about contemporary art in a place that is neither school nor home. For this event, in addition to the 10 people recruited by the Mori Art Museum, 10 university students from the Asia Culture Center (Gwangju, Korea) will participate in a workshop called “6steps,” in which participants will create choreographed movements using a 6-step staircase, with the aim of international cultural exchange. “6steps” is a dance project initiated by choreographer and dancer Kimura Reina and has been running since 2020.
On the first day, participants will view The Architecture of Sou Fujimoto exhibition to the choreography designed by Kimura, Afterward, they will do some exercises to focus on their bodies, and then experience “6steps” by climbing onto and entering the staircase. On the second day, participants will observe staircases of different materials and sizes in Roppongi Hills, and split into groups to create choreography using stairs. Through dance using familiar stairs as a stage, participants will explore the relationship between the body and space, while thinking about architecture that designs people’s movements.
Message to participants
When you typically use stairs, you probably are moving toward a destination beyond the stairs. However, in “6steps,” the sixth step does not lead anywhere. Six steps, where you go up and then you have to go down, are what exist “in that space,” so let’s spend time together experiencing, thinking, talking, and creating anew the body, town, architecture, everyday life, and expression.

6steps
6steps is a dance project that uses a six-step staircase that can be seen, touched, and experienced. Founded by choreographer and dancer Kimura Reina, 6steps works with dancers, web engineers, observers, visual artists, and stage producers to explore its function as a platform that connects performing arts and society. In addition to performances choreographed and directed by Kimura, and performances inviting artists to direct, in 2023 she launched a project in which 6steps is placed in various locations and spaces, where visitors can spend time together. She explores dance with a variety of bodies, opening up space, time and choreography from multiple angles.
Kimura Rena
Founder and representative of 6steps. Concept, choreography, and occasional performer. Interested in the relationship between climate, words and the body, and the way people are/live, she creates and performs in various places both in Japan and abroad, asking the question, “For whom is dance?” In recent years, she has also worked as a researcher and facilitator for dance projects, dealing with the bodies/minds of people of all ages. Since 2020, she has established a small space/base called itoguchi on the outskirts of Tokyo, where she runs a space for experimentation and exchange that goes beyond presentations, loosely connecting with the land and society. She will be a Saison Fellow II from 2025.
About “Art Camp”
Over the years, Mori Building Company and the Mori Art Museum have collaborated with artists from across the globe to run a variety of programs at the Museum and out on the streets. Summer 2018 saw the launch of a new “Art Camp” program targeting younger art-lovers; giving them the opportunity to discuss “contemporary art” with artists and curators in a different environment from the usual school format of “teacher” and “taught,” employing the Museum and entire Roppongi Hills neighborhood as a canvas. Talking with others encourages participants to think about current happenings at home or school, historical events, social, political and cultural developments in the wider world, and the connection of all these with contemporary art, helping them to explore interesting and enjoyable aspects of contemporary art.
