Guide to the Wave UFO Experience

Please note that Wave UFO, one of the works featured in this exhibition, is an interactive, experiential piece that visualizes visitors’ brainwaves in real time. Visitors lie inside the pod-like structure wearing a headset that detects their brainwaves while they watch an approximately seven-minute video projected onto the domed ceiling. The experience begins with imagery that responds to their own brainwaves, followed by a screening of the video work Connected World.
For visitors who do not enter Wave UFO, CG-generated brainwave imagery and the video work Connected World are on display at the Wave UFO Experience Simulation Dome, located in the same gallery.

  • - Session times are subject to change or cancellation without prior notice.
  • - Guests will be admitted in the order of arrival. Due to capacity limits, members of the same party may be separated, or the order of entry may change.
  • - Because of the way the brainwave synchronization program works, guests are admitted in groups of three. If you come alone or with one other person, you must agree in advance to being seated with other guests.
  • - Advance reservations by phone or other means are not accepted.

Conditions of Participation (Participant Consent)

Because of the structure of the work and for safety reasons, please read and agree to the following before taking part. You will be asked to sign a consent form at check-in on the day.

1. Eligibility
  • - The entrance to and exit from the installation feature uniquely shaped stairs with acrylic steps that may be slippery. For safety reasons, visitors must ascend and descend one at a time while holding onto the handrail, without assistance. Please note that walking aids (canes, walkers, etc.) and wheelchairs cannot be used for this experience. Additionally, due to weight restrictions on the stairs and seating, this experience is not available for guests weighing over 100 kg (approx. 220 lbs).
  • - For safety reasons, children under age 6 cannot take part. Children under age 16 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.
  • - This experience takes place in an enclosed space with closed doors and features flashing lights. As this may cause physical discomfort, the following individuals are kindly asked to refrain from participating:
    • - Those prone to severe anxiety or difficulty breathing in enclosed spaces (e.g., claustrophobia)
    • - Those who have experienced seizures triggered by light stimulation (e.g., epilepsy)
    • - Those with implanted medical devices such as pacemakers
    • - Anyone else whose condition may worsen due to flashing lights or enclosed spaces
  • - Guests who have been drinking alcohol cannot participate.
2. Prohibited Items, Protection of the Work, and Liability for Damage
  • - To protect the work and ensure accurate brainwave measurement, the following items are prohibited inside the installation. Please store them in the lockers provided at the venue during your experience.
    • - All electronic devices (including camera phones)
    • - Accessories such as watches, rings, necklaces, and earrings
    • - Belts with large buckles
    • - Anything else deemed by staff to pose a risk of damaging the work
  • - Please empty your pockets completely so that nothing falls out and damages the interior of the work or its precision equipment.
  • - The interior of the installation, including the seating, is made of highly delicate, specialized materials. You may be held liable for damages if the work is damaged or soiled through your fault or negligence, including bringing in prohibited items.
  • - Never touch the high-precision projector or the exposed spherical lens in the center of the seating area.
  • - Visitors are responsible for managing their own belongings and valuables. The museum is not responsible for loss or mix-ups. Perishable items left behind in the lockers will be discarded at the end of the day, and any other items not claimed within three months will also be discarded.
3. During the Experience
  • - Please remove your shoes and wear the non-slip socks provided by staff.
  • - To measure your brainwaves, a headset and disposable adhesive electrodes will be attached at four points: three on your forehead and one on your neck.
  • - To improve electrode adhesion and measurement accuracy, staff will use an alcohol wipe to clean oil from your forehead and skin. If you have an alcohol allergy or sensitive skin, please inform staff beforehand. The museum is not responsible for temporary redness or other skin irritation caused by the adhesive gel or wiping process.
  • - Staff may help you up and down the stairs and with putting on the headset, which may involve touching your skin or forehead.
  • - The entrance to the installation is low (maximum height 110 cm), so you will need to bend down deeply to get in. Please self-assess your physical condition and ability to participate before entering.
  • - Staff will remove the headset after the experience. To avoid damaging the equipment or causing injury, do not attempt to remove it yourself.
4. Emergencies and Use of the Emergency Button
  • - If you feel unwell or an emergency arises during the experience, press the green emergency button near your feet. Pressing the button triggers a loud alarm, turns on the interior lights, and forces an immediate halt and reset of the program. Please use the button only in the event of a genuine emergency.
  • - After the button is pressed, or if the program stops in an emergency, staff will come to assist you immediately. In a power outage, the interior may go dark, but staff will open the door manually. Please remain calm and remain seated rather than trying to exit on your own. Do not attempt to open the doors yourself, this will slow down your exit.
5. Brainwave Data Handling
  • - Although the brainwave data collected during the experience is personal information, it is only used to generate the imagery projected onto the ceiling in real time and is never recorded or stored.
  • - By taking part, you agree to have your brainwaves (alpha waves for relaxation, beta waves for stress or anxiety, etc.) projected in colors onto the domed ceiling during the experience, making them visible to all other participants.
