Gwangju Biennale is the first and the largest contemporary art biennale in Asia, founded in 1995 when there was a boom of establishing biennales during the 1990s. The city of Gwangju is also known as a sacred city for the repression of the Gwangju Democratization Movement in 1980. Founded in reminiscence of spirits of civil uprising, Gwangju Biennale has established its prestigious position in Asia, reflecting such political and historical background.
The 9th Gwangju Biennale starting on September 7th is remarked for being curated by a team of six female Co-Artistic Directors. “ROUNDTABLE,” is expressed through six interrelated sub-themes presented by each curator and describes the working relationship and the conversational interaction in non-linear structure.
"Urgent Talk 015" celebrates the opening of Gwangju Biennale, organizing a performance by Sasamoto Aki, a participating artist, and a talk session by Sasamoto and Kataoka Mami, one of the six Co-Artistic Directors of ROUNDTABLE.

Kataoka Mami (Chief Curator, Mori Art Museum, Co-artistic director of Gwangju Biennale 2012) - Sasamoto Aki
- Born in 1980 in Kanagawa, Japan, and based in New York, Aki Sasamoto works in visual art, performance and dance and is co-founder of the nonprofit interdisciplinary organization Culture Push. She is known for making multimedia sculptural environments in which she stages live performances, and has exhibited internationally at events including the 2012 Gwangju Biennale, 2010 Whitney Biennale, 2010 Greater New York and 2008 Yokohama Triennale. Her solo exhibition take place at Take Ninagawa in Higashi Azabu, September 9 [Sun] - October 6 [Sat], 2012.
