Urgent Talk 010:
Development of Wider Audience with the Use of Digital Media - Tate's Challenge

Japanese-English simultaneous interpretation available

In an ever-evolving and diversifying contemporary society, there are various issues and challenges art institutions all over the world are now facing. One of the representative art institutions in Britain, the Tate, has actively been taking on the challenge of attracting a wider audience by utilizing "contemporary" means, such as social networking services (Facebook, Twitter) and digital media.
"Urgent Talk 010" features Marc Sands, Director of Audiences and Media at the Tate, who manages the Tate's online branding, public relations, marketing, membership and ticket sales, and leads the teams behind TATE ETC. magazine and the online video magazine TateShots. Sands will give an introduction to the Tate's recent undertakings, as well as the issues and challenges associated with them. In addition, we will welcome Alex Fleetwood, Founder and Director of the British creative group, Hide & Seek, which specializes in creating social games and "playful" experiences. Hide & Seek has not only collaborated with art institutions such as the Tate and co-produced pervasive projects where the audience can actively participate, but also developed mobile applications to reach out to an entirely new body of art audience. This talk will consist of an introduction to the various innovative projects that the world's leading art institution has undertaken, and there will also be a discussion about the future and further possibilities of developing a wider audience for Japanese art institutions.

Alex Fleetwood
Founder/Director, "Hide & Seek." Alex Fleetwood recently won the British Council UK Young Performing Arts Entrepreneur of the Year Award. He founded Hide & Seek in 2007 and has had a hand in all its projects since then. Specializing in social games and playful experiences, Hide & Seek founded the UK's first festival of pervasive games in London the same year (which is now the "Hide & Seek Weekender," taking place every summer on London's South Bank), and they've been working, thinking and playing together ever since. "The Sandpit" is the public version of the online collaboration ethos: a social hub where anyone into games can share ideas and engage in an open design process and it has also been held on a regular basis. This innovative approach has caught the eyes of representative institutions of Britain such as Tate, South Bank Centre and The National Theatre. Hide & Seek's epochal projects to date have been drawing considerable attention, not just from the art scene. Hide & Seek:
