MAM Research 012: Diasporic Memories - Korean Artists Living Beyond Borders Related Program

A talk session will be held in conjunction with the exhibition MAM Research 012: Diasporic Memories - Korean Artists Living Beyond Borders. In the first segment of the program, exhibition collaborators will present insights into the works of the featured artists—Quac Insik, Song Hyun-Sook, and Alexander Ugay—followed by the exhibition curator discussing the journey from its conception through to its realization, including some of the questions that emerged through the exhibition-making process. In the second segment, a discussion exploring the artists' practices through key themes such as “diaspora” and “memories” will be featured.

Kim Hyeshin

Born in Seoul. Kim majored in art history at the Graduate School of Ewha Womans University, later earning her Ph.D. at Gakushuin University. She currently serves as the Director of the Nanjo Art Museum and as a visiting professor at the Okinawa Prefectural University of the Arts. Her areas of expertise include modern and contemporary Asian art, female artists, and the intersection of diaspora and art. Her publications include A Study of Modern Korean Art: Foreign Cultural Domination and Cultural Representation as Seen in ‘Exhibitions of Korean Art’ (Chosen Bijutsu Tenrankai) in the Colonial Period (Brücke, 2005), Crossing Gazes, Art and Gender 2 (Brücke, 2005), and Still Hear the Wound: Toward an Asia, Politics, and Art to Come (Iwanami Shoten, 2009).
