バーロウの新作《アンダーカバー 2》は、高さの異なる28本の脚によって支えられた、キャノピーのような構造の大型彫刻作品です。木材と鋼鉄を組み合わせた脚と骨組みがキャノピー全体を支えています。一見不安定に組み合わされた工業用素材と赤やオレンジといった鮮やかな色の布の組み合わせは勢いがあり、力強いエネルギーを感じさせるとともに、遊び心あふれる印象を与えます。
バーロウは、身近な環境からインスピレーションを得ています。段ボール、布、合板、ポリスチレン、セメントなどの安価で手に入りやすい工業用素材を用いることは、大理石やブロンズを素材とする権威的な彫刻への批判を暗示しています。本作の周りを歩くことで、鑑賞者は素材の表情、スケール、また展示空間との関係性など、作品を構成するさまざま要素に気付き、体感することができます。そうした鑑賞者との関係性もバーロウの作品にとっては重要な要素のひとつです。

Barlow’s new work, Undercover 2, is a large, canopy-like sculpture supported by twenty-eight legs of varying heights. The legs and a framework are made of wood and steel, and support the entire canopy. The combination of the seemingly unstable combination of industrial materials and the fabric brightly painted in various colors such as red and orange exude a sense of vitality, giving the impression of both powerful energy and playfulness.
Barlow draws inspiration from her immediate environment. Her use of inexpensive and readily available industrial materials such as cardboard, cloth, plywood, polystyrene, and cement implies a critique of imposing and authoritarian sculptures made of marble and bronze. By circling around this work, viewers gain an appreciation for the various elements that make up the work, such as the expression of the materials, the scale, and the relationship of the piece to the exhibition space. This sort of relationship with the viewer is one of the most important elements of Barlow’s work.
