The contrast between the red, yellow, and black is striking in this combination of rectangles and lines on the canvas, and various tones even within the same color are used. Nunung, who says that “color is the totality of expression,” has been giving expression to the scenes and sensations she has personally seen and felt in her abstract paintings while adhering to the Islamic values that prohibit idolatry. Her work has always been based on her observations of the nature found on her home island of Java and the lives of the people who live there. In her “Dimension of a Weaving” series, she depicts a wide variety of colors from traditional Indonesian textiles known as songket and batik, while in Verzon #2 (2020) and Pintu Gerbang (The Gate), she works with colors and spaces inspired by the ruins of Borobudur.
